Pittsburgh Food Trucks

With summer around the corner, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite food trucks from around the Pittsburgh area. Many of them even offer private catering for events (think graduation parties, weddings, corporate functions or the annual neighborhood barbeque!)

BRGR

One of the best burger joints in town is also on wheels! The BRGR truck can be seen on its normal route around the city during the week, parking at the Parkway Center Office Park in Greentree on Wednesdays and stationing itself at the corner of Forbes and Grant in downtown on Thursdays.

BRGR is also one of the trucks you can rent for your special event.

“Yes, we do take our food truck to weddings, corporate functions, festivals, birthday parties, graduations, picnics, etc.,” said Marissa Gulas, Event and Social Media Manager. “Typically our guests will order off the regular menu. Sometimes for private functions our hosts will select an additional item to be included or will remove some items from our standard menu.”

Gulas said while BRGR has one truck to rent, it is common for customers to hire more than one different food truck option for their guests to choose from to eat. She said customers should take into consideration if they want their guests to all sit down and eat at once or if they want to have a steady flow throughout the night.

“The number of food trucks per function varies depending on the food trucks,” she said. “Some trucks’ food takes longer to cook and prepare than others.”

Rolling Cone

This truck is new to the Pittsburgh scene – founded last year by husband and wife, Mike and Kristen Baughman. The duo run the Rolling Cone truck in addition to their full time jobs.

“We started operating last summer – weddings, corporate events, festivals and food truck roundups,” Mike Baughman said. “We operate during the week for some events, mainly on weekends because of our regular jobs. We don’t have a set schedule … every weekend changes based on our events. We use social media to keep our truck schedule up-to-date.”

It was a dream of theirs to open an ice cream shop, but with their day jobs, Baughman said it was near-impossible to follow through on that dream.

“Actually [it was] my wife’s idea to open it from a truck,” he said. “The food truck scene was expanding, and we both didn’t want to quit our jobs, so thought a food truck was a good alternative.

“We were out on a date and started to talk about it. About a week later there was a truck for sale about a mile down the road from our house. And so we bought it and jumped in – that was about late April, and we were open by July.”

The couple serve Penn State Berkey Creamery, a tradition at Mike’s alma mater, Penn State University.

“It’s world famous ice cream. If you went to Penn State, it is probably one of your favorite things in the world,” Baughman said. “My wife and I traveled to Penn State a lot for football games and events, and the only place you can buy it is at Penn State.”

Baughman said the duo must travel to Penn State to pick up the ice cream for their supply.

“It depends on time of year (for how often we go),” he said. “Sometimes it is weekly, and sometimes it is less often. We have operated at least one event each month, year round. … Even in the middle of January we were selling ice cream in 15 degree weather.”

Baughman said the variety of flavors is different from time to time, depending on the availability of flavors at Penn State when they go to pick them up. He added that they usually have 10 to 15 flavors available at a time, and people can choose the flavors they want for their events from what Rolling Cones has available.

“If we have enough time before an event, and people have a special request, we can see if The Creamery has it, and we can get it for the event,” he said.

The couple look to expand their customer base this summer and want to get more involved in serving at private events.

“In a couple of weeks we are going to a Frozen-themed birthday party for 3-year-old,” Baughman said. “We are flexible – graduation parties, weddings, parties – whatever you want. We can serve ice cream out of our truck or bring it inside. We like to give the people what they want for their events.”

Franktuary

Five years ago, Franktuary expanded its growing business to include a food truck, and it plans to expand even further this year.

“We have one truck, but we are scheduled to have a second truck arrive in Pittsburgh this May,” said Tim Tobitsch, president and owner of Franktuary.

Specializing in “grass-fed and humanely raised meat, specialty sausages, vegetarian and gluten-free options,” the Franktuary truck delivers its food to the streets of Pittsburgh.

The menu, taken from the bricks and mortar restaurant, is streamlined for the food truck for the sake of efficiency, Tobitsch said, adding that Franktuary does its best to accommodate special requests for private events.

Special event catering is also available with the restaurant on wheels, which can be booked through truck@franktuary.com.

“The truck only appears by invitation,” Tobitsch said. “If someone wants to have us and is in a position to meet our sales minimum, we add them to our calendar!”

Peak food truck season is April through October, he said, although as people embrace food trucks in this city an increasing number of winter opportunities are coming our way.

Check out the Franktuary website, Twitter page, or Facebook account for updates on the menu and locations of the food truck.

Bella Christie and Lil Z’s Sweet Boutique

Need to satisfy your sweet tooth? Bella Christie and Lil Z’s Sweet Boutique may be the perfect food truck to have at your next event.

The truck is available for all kinds of events, from school functions, mitzvahs, and corporate events to festivals and weddings.

“It is a great way to make a statement at an event,” Amanda Byrne, Director of Events, said.

While Bella Christie’s has two stores, one in Aspinwall and one in Lawrenceville, Byrne said she sees the truck as “another fun type of advertising for us.”

She added that all of Bella Christie’s food truck appearances are scheduled in advance.

“People contact us for fundraisers,” Byrne said. “We do a lot of private parties; we don’t usually just go out [on the truck] on a whim.”

The truck typically serves a different menu than the stores, focusing on items such as cake pops, chocolate covered Rice Krispie treats and mini cupcakes. Byrne added that chocolate covered bacon is a popular item, and during the summer, they will serve seasonal items, like freshly-squeezed lemonade.

“We have our regular menu, which for certain events, people just pick from,” Byrne said. “If a client has booked the truck for their own personal event, they can dictate which items we sell.”

Bella Christie’s also offers extra amenities for events, such as a liquid nitrogen station or a doughnut cart, which can be just be added to the truck.

To reserve the truck for your next event, visit the Bella Christie’s website or give them a call.

PGH Taco Truck

PGH Taco Truck was a 20-year dream that finally became a reality for owner and operator James Rich in 2012. Rich began in the food industry in college, where he said working on a food truck was his favorite job.

“I worked in mobile food 25 years ago in college, and I remembered how much fun it was,” Rich said. “Food trucks are trendy and there seemed to be an interest in them in Pittsburgh, so I planned out the business from the ground up.”

When deciding what he wanted to serve at his truck, Rich decided on tacos as a versatile food that anyone could enjoy.

“Tacos are perfect street food, they’re portable – i.e. handheld – and you can make a lot of varieties of them so there’s something for everyone,” he said.

PGH Taco Truck also offers catering, with Rich adding that they usually work one event a week, and they try to schedule a mixture of events, balancing private events with street vending and festivals/events.

The menu at the PGH Taco Truck evolves, with Rich often taking into account what is selling locally and what the customers are asking for, including special requests for events.

Rich added that they try to source local ingredients, such as beef, which comes from a family farm in Clarion.

“Most clients leave the menu to us, but some request specific items that we may only do occasionally, such as ceviche, lobster, crab, exotic game, and specialized vegetarian items,” Rich said.

The best way to get into contact with someone at PGH Food Truck for event catering is to call or email, Rich said, adding that their contact information is on their website.

You can find more about the PGH Taco Truck and its locations on social media – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

SpeechBooth

While we know your guests will be on the dance floor most of the night, it’s fun to have other activities planned for them as well. Photobooths have become very popular at weddings and we’ve found another fun idea to incorporate into your reception, Speechbooth. Speechbooth gives every guest the chance to make a speech and tell you just how much they love you.

The week of your big day, Speechbooth will mail you the easy to assemble light-weight kit. Throughout your reception, guests record video messages at their leisure with an easy to use touch screen that does not require an onsite attendant. A week after returning the kit, Speechbooth compiles all of the recordings into a video filled with memories of your wedding that will last a lifetime.

Movies

Cinderella was recently released by Disney in live-action format with stars Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother and big screen newcomer Lily James as the lead role. It was a huge hit opening weekend, grossing more than $70.1 million dollars in the U.S. alone.

In the recent weeks, Disney has announced four other classics that would be made into live-action adaptions – Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo and The Jungle Book. The films are rumored to be released as early as 2017 – and we can’t wait! Big stars are lined up for the movies, including Emma Watson as Belle and Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast. In The Jungle Book, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to star as the tiger while Christian Bale has been cast as the panther, and newcomer Rohan Chand as Mowgli. The early stages of the production of Dumbo have begun, with Tim Burton named as the director, and Mulan was just announced on March 30 as the latest Disney movie to be adapted as a live-action film.

Wedding Cakes

A delicious complement to our previous pick, we also love these Disney-inspired wedding cakes from WeddingChicks.com. These cakes are elegant and romantic with a subtle touch of Disney flair.
